Anarchist Debates on Privilege
This collection of articles bring together in one place a series of debates and discussion of around privilege and intersectionality that have been taken place in anarchist circles over the last couple of years. Though the theories around privilege have been around for some time now, they have now reached the mainstream in earnest and taken on a common currency in radical social change circles. However, aspects of them sit uneasily with anarchist politics and the debates in these articles attempt to pull this apart, either to reject this approach to radical social justice or seeking to integrate them better.
These articles do not define a final privilege theory or give defintive answers. Rather, they are examing the practice as its currently being incorporated into anarchist circles. They show ways forward and also point out pitfalls, not shying away from the problem parts of liberation and identity politics that are embedded in a liberal-capitalist world.
Green anarchism has already been greatly shaped by its encounters with others liberation struggles. While those who identify with it like to see themselves as anti-discrimation in all its forms, quite often the practice fails to meet the aspirations or is naively assumed. Thus, it is likely that the encounter with the wider politics of privilege will likewise influence future developments of anarchism as well, and hopefully strenghten the fight against all forms of oppressions.
To us, it seems we are in a moment, a staging point in this journey. We hope you find this collection useful, even if there material in it you disagree with. As ever, we are looking for responses and challenges to the viewpoints, so if you want to respond, please get in touch.
The publication comes as a 60 page A4, magazine, shortly to be available from AK Press and Active Distribution. It is also available to download as a pdf here.
